When people visit Myanmar, Inle Lake is always on the visit list for those wanting to see the famous Leg rowers. To reach these famous rowers, one can either choose to station themselves right on the lake (comes with a hefty price tag) or station at Nyaung Shwe, the sleepy town which is the main access point for the lake. If you happen to have an extra day or two to explore around Inle Lake or just plain sick on being on a tiny boat tour, these are the things to do around Nyaung Shwe.
Inle Horse Club
Founded in 2015, Inle Horse Club is an eco-tourism social enterprise which is just a mere 15 min bike ride from Nyaung Shwe. Here, you can either go horseback riding along their course or visit nearby villages. They also have a family cafe and can take home cooking classes.
They also happen to be winner of Best Tourism Business Innovation 2018, given out by Myanmar Responsible Tourism Awards.

Hot Air Balloon Ride
An extraordinary way to experience Inle Lake. Once over the water you will be greeted with the sights and sounds of Local Inthar fishermen looking for the first catch of the day, Ethnic minorities such as Danu, Kayah and Danaw who descend from their villages and on their way to the market through a maze of green floating canals. Places to Visit
Nyaung Shwe Culture Museum
This place used to be the former palace of Nyaung Shwe Chao Pa (a royal title used by the hereditary rulers of the Tai people). Built in 1913 by Chao Pa Sir. Saw Maung, this palace was in continuous usage up until the first Myanmar President, Sao Shwe Theik. The museum showcases the past and cultures of the Chao Pa, displaying traditional ceremony dresses and cultural items. Closes on Monday, Tuesday, and Gazetted Holidays.
Maing Thouk Bridge
Maik Thauk Bridge, The U Bein Bridge of Inle Lake, is a must stop place if you are biking around Inle Lake. It is about a 20 – 25 min bike ride from Nyaung Shwe. You also can rent boats here to visit sites on Inle Lake as well. It’s a great place to visit during sunset with the sun setting behind the Shan hills. You can also spot floating gardens left and right of the bridge as well.
Shwe Yan Pyay Monastery
This Monastery is known for its famous oval windows with young novice monks looking out which used to be the cover of Lonely Planet guide books. The Monastery houses ancient buddha images and shrines inside the wooden monastery. Right beside the monastery is a small stupa with interconnected caves that are adorned with mosaic glasses and Buddha images.

Red Mountain Vineyard
Who would have guessed that Myanmar wine are kinda decent? Red Mountain Vineyard is one of the 2 vineyards in Shan State (the other being Ayetharyar Vineyard).The best time to be here is right before the sunset. While you are here, you can do go per glass, or the whole bottle (no one will judge you) or do some wine tasting. Make sure you call to book to get the best spot for sunset as it is books out really fast for the evenings.
Yep, bar hopping in Nyaung Shwe. You read it right. Intimate little bars spread across town, and with little to no traffic, its ok to come back not sober. On your return from the Horse Club, you will come across a unique bamboo tree house restaurant. This is “A Little Tree House Restaurant” is a two story bamboo house opened by A Little Eco Lodge in November 2017. The Upstairs overlooks the near by dam and fields grazed by cows. La Rizie’re Buvette
Known locally as Lae Taw Rain (Village House), is entirely built out of bamboo and has intricate bamboo designs. It has an open kitchen and serves organic vegetables. This is only a short 10 min bike ride from downtown Nyaung Shwe.
Coffee House by Pleasant Garden
This coffee house sits on the opposite hill from Red Mountain Vineyard. Not only coffee, but also wine, fruit juices and local cuisines are served at this location. You can also wander around in their large gardens as well.
Nyaung Shwe Night Market
Opened in the center of the town, the night market is the place to go if you want the local cuisines and souvenirs all at one place.
